What Is a Dental Crown?
As one of the more common dental restorations we offer, dental crowns are used when cavities caused by dental decay are too severe to be repaired by traditional dental fillings. Often known as a dental “cap,” a dental crown is used to cover healthy parts of the tooth to retain as much of the natural tooth as possible while also restoring the functionality of the damaged tooth. The dental crown is custom made and shaped to fit the tooth and comfortably match your bite. This dental restoration can be made from gold, metal or porcelain, and at our office we use zirconia and E-MAX dental crowns. Most patients prefer porcelain or zirconia crowns because they look like normal teeth.
